CFIB statement on the Passing of the Hon. Jim Flaherty

TORONTO, April 10, 2014 /CNW/ - It is with sadness that my colleagues and I learned today of the passing of the Hon. Jim Flaherty.

Minister Flaherty was not only a very kind and generous person, but a strong supporter of Canada's small business community. The minister had a deep understanding of the community, having run a small business while in private practice. He leaves behind an impressive record in supporting entrepreneurs, having brought in policies like lowering small business corporate taxes, increasing the lifetime capital gains exemption, introducing a code of conduct for the credit and debit card industry. His work in managing the country's finances during difficult economic times will leave an important legacy for Canadians for many years to come. His contributions to his country will not be forgotten. On a personal note, we at CFIB will miss our regular meetings with Jim during his time at both the federal and provincial levels.

On behalf of the members, staff and Board of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, I want to express our sincere condolences to Minister Flaherty's family on his passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Christine and his three sons.

Canadians owe a great deal to Jim Flaherty. He kept our economy stable during a period of great turmoil and devoted himself to the best interests of all Canadians, sometimes at personal cost.  Canada needs more people of his caliber and commitment to public life. We will miss him.
