CFPC Past President: One of Canada's Top 100 Women of 2010
MISSISSAUGA, ON, Nov. 29 /CNW/ - The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) congratulates Dr. Ruth Wilson on being named one of Canada's Top 100 women. Dr. Wilson will be presented with the prestigious award by the Women's Executive Network on November 29, 2010 at the Top 100 Awards Gala Dinner in Toronto.
"It is a great pleasure to celebrate Dr. Wilson's professional accomplishments," says Dr. Rob Boulay, president of the CFPC. "She is an outstanding family physician, a teacher, and a researcher, as well as a medical leader who has made significant contributions to improving health care for Canadians. On behalf of the CFPC Board, I commend her on her outstanding dedication and achievements."
Dr. Wilson is currently the Consulting Director, Health Policy for the CFPC, and a Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Queen's University. She served on the College's Executive Committee from 1999 to 2009, and was National President from 2007 to 2008. In this capacity she spearheaded the development of policies for primary care reform, improving access to care, decreasing wait times for Canadians, and developing initiatives to address the shortage of family physicians in Canada. These issues were also addressed through her involvement as Chair of the Ontario Government Family Health Network Agency and Chair of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care's Health Results Team.
"Ruth Wilson is an outstanding family doctor who, throughout her career, has demonstrated a passion for improving the delivery of health care for patients in all communities, including the underserved," said Dr. Calvin Gutkin, executive director and CEO of the College of Family Physicians of Canada. "Her areas of clinical and research activity include delivering babies, women's issues and Aboriginal health. She has been a teacher, role model and mentor for hundreds of students and residents and a leading policy consultant in primary care across Canada at the same time as running a busy clinical practice, being an active member of her community and a devoted wife and mother of five. She also runs marathons in her spare time! Ruth is truly a champion in her field and an inspiration to many."
In March, 2010, Dr. Wilson was one of two physicians from around the world who received the '5 Star Doctor' award from Wonca, the World Organization of Family Doctors.
