OTTAWA, Oct. 3, 2018 /CNW/ - The Canadian Gas Association (CGA) applauds LNG Canada's investment decision for the development of the country's first large-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) project. To be built in Kitimat, British Columbia, this marks the single largest private capital investment in Canadian history and will showcase Canada's world class natural gas industry.
CGA considers this project to be an important opportunity to develop Canadian resources and connect them to global energy needs. Clean, affordable natural gas is poised to increase its share of both domestic and global energy markets. In Canada, the National Energy Board forecasts natural gas will become the single largest source of energy by 2040 – accounting for 40 per cent of total energy use. Globally, the International Energy Agency forecasts a 45 per cent increase in natural gas demand by 2040. With projects like LNG Canada's, our country is well-positioned to help meet this growing demand.
Canadian natural gas utilities have been safely operating domestic-purposed LNG facilities in Canada for over 40 years. There are currently a total of eight such facilities across the country - three in British Columbia, two in Alberta, one in Ontario and two in Quebec. Looking forward, LNG offers opportunity as a fuel for remote communities, freight transportation, and ocean-going vessels. The LNG Canada project builds on the domestic expertise and experience to take Canadian know-how and resources global.
