Helping to ensure a safer society since 2009, CGI's Burgernet solution will be enhanced with digital technologies to handle more citizen participants and incidents
ROTTERDAM, the Netherlands, March 6, 2017 /CNW Telbec/ - CGI (NYSE: GIB) (TSX: GIB.A) has been awarded a contract by the Netherlands' National Police to develop and maintain Burgernet 2.0—the next generation of a digital community policing solution developed by CGI in 2009 and used across the Netherlands since then. Using mobile technology, the Burgernet solution provides citizens, municipalities and the police with a digital collaboration platform to work together to combat crime and enhance the safety of local communities. Under the new contract, which has a term of 7-10 years, CGI will use new digital technologies to enhance Burgernet, as well as provide ongoing maintenance support.
Burgernet is a virtual citizens' network that allows a police control room operator to send out mobile alerts to participating citizens related to suspicious or criminal activity, such as a missing person, reported burglary or stolen vehicle. Through these alerts, Burgernet participants are given the details of an incident so that they can be vigilant and report any information they might have.
Deployed nationwide, Burgernet has more than 1.6 million citizen participants who are involved in solving more than 2,000 Burgernet incidents per month. As the adoption of digital technologies continues to accelerate and the number of citizen participants and incidents continues to increase, the National Police has asked CGI to enhance the core Burgernet system to expand its network and improve communications, including adding social media capabilities to support the real-time exchange of photos and videos and integrating digital messaging boards along major transportation routes. In addition, the solution will enable citizen participants to connect when they travel across the border.
While development on the digitally enhanced Burgernet system is underway, CGI will continue to maintain the existing system. Once Burgernet 2.0 is completed, CGI will deploy and manage the new system.
"From the beginning of Burgernet, CGI has been closely involved and has considerable expertise in the field of safety," said Gery Veldhuis, Police Chief and Chairman of the Burgernet Steering Committee. "We have full confidence in CGI as we enter this new phase of Burgernet 2.0. Together, we will work diligently to continue to improve the safety of our neighborhoods."
"CGI is proud to manage the further development of Burgernet," said Jeroen Simons Vice-President, CGI, the Netherlands. "It is an exciting opportunity to develop a more robust core system and, through advanced digital technologies, increase its effectiveness. Burgernet 2.0 is a good example of the role digital transformation can play to help ensure a safer society."
