Champlain Corridor: Reserved bus lane to reopen in the morning

LONGUEUIL, QC, June 2, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI), in collaboration with the Agence métropolitaine de transport (AMT), will be reopening the dedicated bus lane in the Champlain Bridge corridor during morning rush hour starting Tuesday, June 3.

Removing the support beam (super beam) last weekend has allowed us to re-establish the full width of the bridge's southbound lanes and thus reopen the dedicated bus lane in the morning.

Reopening this reserved lane concludes the major operation that began in November 2013 and was completed over the past few days on the Champlain Bridge. This operation allowed us to first install a support beam, then replace it with a permanent steel truss that will remain in place until the Champlain Bridge is replaced.

Reopening the reserved lane will facilitate access to downtown Montreal, reducing bottlenecks on both sides of the bridge.

"The dedicated bus lane on the Champlain Bridge allows 22,000 more passengers to cross from one side of the St. Lawrence River to the other every rush hour. Reopening this lane is great news for public transit users, who will see their wait times in traffic reduced as buses are given priority," said Nicolas Girard, President and CEO of AMT.

Finally, please note that the reserved bus lane on the Champlain Bridge will be extended by the end of the year when the new Île des Sœurs Bypass Bridge is opened.
