VALCARTIER, QC, July 13, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - Brigadier-General Jean-Marc Lanthier became the new commander of Land Force Quebec Area and Joint Task Force (East) (LFQA/JTF (East)) during a ceremony at Valcartier Garrison today.
Brigadier-General Richard Giguère, the outgoing commander, handed over command of LFQA/JTF (East) for a new appointment as the Commander of Canadian Forces College Toronto. He had been appointed to the role of commander in August 2011.
"I would like to congratulate BGen Jean-Marc Lanthier on his appointment. Taking on such a position marks a major step in a person's career and is an outstanding accomplishment. His military background and experience make him an ideal candidate to lead Quebec's troops and carry out the missions with which he will be entrusted. His leadership abilities will enable him to skilfully lead the men and women under his command," said the Commander of the Canadian Army Lieutenant-General Peter Devlin, who presided over the military ceremony. "I would like take this opportunity to congratulate Brigadier-General Giguère for the excellence of his command, his ability to rally troops and his closeness with the command teams, as well as his troops and the National Defence team in Quebec."
"I would like to thank the command team for their incredible dedication and professionalism. I would also like to thank my staff for its great versatility, expertise and integrity. It is thanks to all of you that we have been able to do such a great job carrying out the missions entrusted to us," said LFQA/JTF (East)'s outgoing commander, Brigadier-General Giguère. "It has been an honour and a privilege to command Quebec's troops," he continued.
Brigadier-General Lanthier, for his part, said, "It is a great joy for me to serve within Land Force Quebec Area and Joint Task Force (East). It is also an honour and a privilege to be able to command such a professional and competent team. Now that the troops are home, my main objective will be to pursue relevant training activities so that Quebec's soldiers can retain a high level of competency and remain ready for any and all eventualities, whether domestic or expeditionary."
LFQA includes the members of the Regular and Reserve Force throughout Quebec. It is responsible for training and generating troops for domestic and expeditionary operations. JTF (East) is the authority that directs operations for all CF elements in Quebec (Army, Navy and Air Force) during domestic operations.
