ST.JOHN'S, NL, June 27, 2013 /CNW/ - The Children's Wish Foundation of Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter, received major gift donations yesterday totalling $35,000 from Peter Kiewit Infrastructure Co. (PKI) and Suncor Energy, at the Cow Head Fabrication facility in Marystown. Mr. Stew Strong and Mr. Michael Dyke (Suncor) were joined by Mr. Michael Buckle (PKI) to make the presentation to Ms. Edie Newton, Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter Director. Wish Families and friends from the local community were also be in attendance.
"This very generous donation will allow us to grant the most heartfelt wishes for deserving children from the region," said Ms. Edie Newton, Chapter Director for Newfoundland and Labrador. "Our Burin subchapter has been very active and this gift reflects the support they have garnered through the good work they do. We are very grateful to Suncor and PKI, and of course the employees who ultimately made this happen."
The donation was a gesture of appreciation for the local community, and recognition of the outstanding support and commitment to safety exhibited by employees of Suncor Energy during the recent extended turnaround on the Terra Nova FPSO at Cow Head.
During the turnaround, a safety and performance recognition program was implemented to encourage and enable all personnel to proactively identify and mitigate potential hazards and risks at the worksite due to the significant number of new workers at the dockside facility. There was very strong participation and commitment from all personnel at the worksite, and this commitment to safety directly contributed to the overall success of the turnaround project.
"Over the last several months we have granted several wishes to children in the region," said Ms. Newton. "Two of our wish families just recently returned from Disney, and we are finalizing wishes for two more families in the coming weeks. Requests from the Burin community are ongoing." Ms. Newton added, "I am particularly grateful for the dedication of Barbara Cribb, Burin Subchapter Coordinator and all of our volunteers that are able to make these wishes happen."
Suncor Energy is the operator of the Terra Nova oil field on the Grand Banks, about 350 kms southeast of St. John's. Peter Kiewit Infrastructure is part of the Kiewit Group, which is operator of the Cow Head Fabrication facility in Marystown.
The Children's Wish Foundation of Canada
Each year, thousands of Canadian children between the ages of three and 17 are diagnosed with a life threatening illness. Since 1984, The Children's Wish Foundation of Canada has worked tirelessly to grant exceptional wishes to over 19,000 children and their families. Over 600 of these wishes have been granted in Newfoundland and Labrador since 1986.
This year, the Foundation expects to grant over 1,000 new wishes and is proud to have never refused a wish to an eligible child, and with the help of volunteers and generous donors, is able to grant nearly three wishes every day. Each wish is an individual adventure, carefully structured to meet the needs of a particular child and family. The Foundation is a national charity with chapters in every province and territory.
