CIO Association of Canada 2010 Salary Survey released to members: Women's CIO
base earnings on par with men in C-Suite IT
TORONTO, June 9 /CNW/ - The CIO Association of Canada has released its second annual salary survey to members. Among the key findings:
Women CIO average base salaries in 2010 are on par with men's at $161,000 (up from $155,000 in 2009). In fact women had a slight edge - of about $1000 - in 2009.
While CIO average base salary is up in 2010, combined salary (salary plus bonus) is down. The average CIO salary plus bonus across Canada is $196,000 (down from $202,000 last year).
Although bonus pay is a key salary differentiator, bonuses clearly were not as big in 2010 as in 2009. A full 78% of member CIOs received a bonus or incentive payment in 2010. For CIOs that received a bonus or incentive, the average payment was $44,500 (down from $47,000 last year).
Industry is another key salary differentiator. Leading the way in CIO average combined earnings by industry are mining ($277,500), financial services ($257,900), technology ($236,600), and retail ($220,600). While the average bonus in financial services was $34,100 this year, down from $62,500 last year, banking CIOs retain the number two spot in combined earnings.
Region may be a key differentiator - Edmonton area CIOs are the top average earners within CIOCAN membership - but the sample size within this new chapter is too small to make definitive conclusions.
While most (73%) CIOs continue to be at least satisfied with their salaries, the percentage that are at least somewhat unsatisfied almost doubled - from 14% last year to 27% this year.
Note: The full survey cannot be released to the public due to privacy considerations of CIO Association members.
The CIO Association of Canada (CIOCAN) represents the CIO profession in Canada. CIOCAN is a self-managed, not-for-profit community of IT leaders whose mission is to facilitate networking, sharing of best practices, executive development, and advocacy on issues facing CIOs.
