Cipher Pharmaceuticals Receives Health Canada Approval of Xydalba™ (dalbavancin hydrochloride)
MISSISSAUGA, ON, Sept. 10, 2018 /CNW/ - Cipher Pharmaceuticals Inc. (TSX:CPH) today announced it received Health Canada approval of Xydalba™ (dalbavancin hydrochloride), the first and only one-dose treatment option for acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI) in adults and available in Canada.
Dr. George G. Zhanel, Professor of Medical Microbiology/Infectious Diseases at the University of Manitoba and the Director of the Canadian Antimicrobial Resistance Alliance, commented on the milestone: "The approval of Xydalba offers a new and effective treatment option for adults with acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections. Xydalba is the first bactericidal, single-dose IV therapy effective against resistant bacteria such as MRSA causing skin and soft tissue infections, including cellulitis/erysipelas, major cutaneous abscesses and wound infections. This single-dose IV agent fulfills a significant unmet need, allowing for outpatient parenteral and emergency room antibiotic treatment."
"We are pleased to achieve this important regulatory milestone on schedule and look forward to introducing Xydalba to Canadian medical professionals in early 2019," said Robert Tessarolo, President and CEO of Cipher. "Xydalba is the first and only 30-minute, single-dose treatment option for ABSSSI in Canada that delivers a full course of IV therapy. The approval of Xydalba bolsters our Canadian commercial business, adding a near term line of revenue, provides diversification to our portfolio and reinforces our commitment to bring new and innovative medicines to Canadian patients."
Cipher acquired Xydalba through the acquisition of the Canadian business portfolio of Cardiome Pharma Corp., which was completed in May 2018.
About Xydalba™
Xydalba™ for injection is a second-generation, semi-synthetic lipoglycopeptide, which consists of a lipophilic side-chain added to an enhanced glycopeptide backbone. Xydalba is the first and only 30-minute, one-dose treatment option for acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI) that delivers a full course of IV therapy. Xydalba can be administered as either one 1,500 mg dose or as a two-dose regimen of 1,000 mg followed one week later by 500 mg, each administered over 30 minutes. Xydalba demonstrates bactericidal activity in vitro against a range of Gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus (including methicillin-resistant, also known as MRSA, and methicillin-susceptible strains), Streptococcus pyogenes, as well as certain other streptococcal species, and Enterococcus faecalis (vancomycin susceptible strains).
About ABSSSI
In the U.S., there were more than 4.8 million hospital admissions of adults with acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI) from 2005 through 2011, which included patients with cellulitis, erysipelas, wound infection, and major cutaneous abscess. In fact, hospital admissions for ABSSSI significantly increased by 17.3 percent during this timeframe. The majority of all skin and soft tissue infections in hospitalized patients are caused by streptococci and Staphylococcus aureus, and approximately 59 percent of these S. aureus infections in the U.S. are estimated to be caused by MRSA. Early and effective treatment of ABSSSI is critical to optimize patient recovery and for certain patients may also help to avoid potentially lengthy and costly hospital stays.
