Cision Mourns Passing of Former Canada Newswire (CNW) Executive David Milliken
TORONTO, Aug. 9, 2017 /CNW/ - Cision's Canadian team mourns the loss of David Milliken, 72, retired senior vice president of Canada Newswire (CNW), who passed away on August 3, 2017.
"We are saddened by the passing of David Milliken, former senior executive and board member of Canada Newswire and a true gentleman," said Nicole Guillot, President Cision Canada. "David's experience as a reporter and editor was influential to the company's success as a newswire service and certainly upon its dedication to accuracy. David will forever be remembered for his generous, caring nature and most of all, for his humour."
Mr. Milliken graduated Algonquin College School of Journalism in Ottawa. He pursued a successful and varied career as a reporter and editor for the Renfrew Mercury, the Ottawa Journal, Calgary Sun and Calgary Herald, before joining CNW in 1982. (CNW was acquired in 2016 by Cision.)
Initially hired as Director of Client Services, co-ordinating business development across Canada, Mr. Milliken stayed with CNW for another 32 years. His work spanned operations, product management and sales, and included a position on the company's board of directors, before he retired from a senior vice president role in 2013. In 2011, Mr. Milliken penned a history of CNW, From Wire to Web. Throughout his tenure, he was admired and respected for his insight into both the journalism and communications industries.
A believer in the importance of in-person relationships, Mr. Milliken was a member of numerous professional organizations, including the National Press Club, the Toronto Press Club, the Canadian Public Relations Society, the Communications & Public Relations Foundation of Canada, the International Association of Business Communicators, the Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF), the National Newspaper Awards, the Canadian Investor Relations Institute, and the Radio Television Digital News Association. He supported journalism and public relations from an academic standpoint as well, serving as chair of the development committee for the Bachelor of Public Relations Program at Humber College, and as an advisory committee member for the journalism programs at the University of Western Ontario and Algonquin College. Mr. Milliken was also twice nominated for Ontario's prestigious Premier's Award, winning it in 1995.
"David was an energetic supporter of the CJF. He loved journalism and understood that the organization had a role to play in making it better," recalled John Macfarlane, former editor of Saturday Night, Toronto Life and the Walrus, and past Canadian Journalism Foundation chair (2009-2011).
