City celebrates opening of new Ken Cox Community Centre

TORONTO, May 15 /CNW/ - Councillor Mark Grimes (Ward 6 Etobicoke-Lakeshore) and representatives of the City of Toronto joined members of the community to celebrate the official opening of the new Ken Cox Community Centre. The City-owned facility has been built in partnership with the Toronto Catholic District School Board as an addition to Father John Redmond Catholic Secondary School and Regional Arts Centre, located at 28 Colonel Samuel Smith Dr.

"I am pleased the City is honouring the late Ken Cox, who built a sports legacy in our community. The addition of the new Ken Cox Community Centre provides opportunities to increase participation in sports activity for our youth," said Councillor Grimes. "This facility is an important addition to the recreation amenities in Ward 6 and will certainly be the focal point of activity for the Lakeshore community."

The Ken Cox Community Centre was named in honour of the many contributions Mr. Cox made to the Lakeshore community from 1951 to the present. Mr. Cox coached, managed and refereed 20,000 boys and girls aged 5 to 14 years who played hockey in the area.

Upon entering the foyer, visitors to the new facility will enjoy the spectacular view of the lake and park area from the floor-to-ceiling windows. All the interior space was designed to allow for optimum natural light. The new space also houses a large gymnasium and a small meeting room that can accommodate up to 12 people.

Recreation programs have already begun, with gym classes for active preschoolers and kindergarteners. Other recreation programs such as: basketball for children/youth ages 6-24 years, martial arts, soccer, ball hockey and Girls Unlimited (promotes physical activity, nutrition, leadership skills for girls) will soon follow. Anyone interested in volleyball, fitness, badminton and inline skating (spring only), dance classes in ballet, jazz, hip hop, belly dance, Latin ballroom, Dance - Acro and creative dance, piano and guitar lessons will also have an opportunity to pursue these interests at the centre.
