City of Mississauga launches 2014 CIBC Trophy Mayor's School Cricket Tournament presented by CIMA Canada
Tournament gives thousands of local kids a chance to play Canada's fastest growing sport
MISSISSAUGA, ON, April 29, 2014 /CNW/ - Today, Mayor Hazel McCallion helped kick off the 2014 CIBC Trophy Mayor's School Cricket Tournament, an annual event that brings together multiple cricket teams from middle schools and secondary schools across the GTA. Alex Dhanjal, an Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) volunteer, attended the event and formally congratulated CIMA on the work it's been doing after receiving a three-year long OTF grant in 2013 to help get more Peel Region youth playing cricket.
As Canada's fastest growing sport, cricket engages and brings together Peel Region's richly diverse multicultural communities; and through this program, thousands of young people have access to a healthy activity in their community.
Other participants at today's launch event included:
- Janet McDougald, Chair of the Peel District School Board
- Mario Pascucci, Chair of the Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board
- Michael Lam, Deputy Chair of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA)
- Raza Hasan, Senior Vice-President, CIBC
- Alex Dhanjal, Volunteer Ontario Trillium Foundation
- John Moore Host of Moore In the Morning, Newstalk 1010 was the event's MC
"On behalf of Council, I'd like to congratulate both the cricket volunteers and players for their commitment to their sport," said Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion. "We have a history in Mississauga of working with our community to foster active participation in sport and the growth of cricket has contributed to that success. I'm proud to honour young cricket players with the Mississauga Mayor's CIBC Trophy at today's recognition event."
Dozens of students joined today's event where the 2013 tournament winners and runners-up were presented with the CIBC Trophy, and five individual cricketers from the Peel Region schools were presented with special recognition awards for excellence.
"CIBC has proudly supported this program since its inception because it encourages children in our communities to get active while introducing new fans to Canada's fastest growing sport," said Hasan. "We look forward to presenting the CIBC Trophy to this year's tournament champions."
"CIMA members understand that, even for accountants, numbers are only the beginning. Real value, to a business or to the community, comes from knowing how to bring together strategy, teamwork and perseverance," said Lam. "Cricket helps develop these skills, and the Mayors School Cricket Tournament -- CIBC Trophy is a great way to bring young people together across the GTA. This year the event is bigger and better than ever and I am very proud of the fantastic work the done by the CIMA volunteers to make the tournament a success."
This year's tournament takes place May 12 to 16, with finals on May 31 at the Brampton Soccer Centre. School teams wishing to take part must sign-up online by Saturday, 3 May For information, visit http://www.cimacanada.org/cibc_trophy.jsp.
