City of Toronto celebrates official opening of York Recreation Centre
TORONTO, April 23, 2017 /CNW/ - Residents from the York South-Weston community came out today to tour their new recreation and community centre, participate in arts and recreation activities and participate in the official opening ceremony.
Mayor John Tory, Laura Albanese, MPP for York South-Weston, Councillor James Pasternak (Ward 10 York Centre), Chair of the Community Development and Recreation Committee, local Councillor Frank Di Giorgio (Ward 12 York South-Weston) and Councillor Frances Nunziata (Ward 11 York South-Weston) participated in the official ribbon-cutting and the reveal of a commemorative panel.
"This is the largest recreation centre that the City of Toronto has opened in many years and I'm so pleased to be a part of it," said Mayor Tory. "The community was integral to the development of this phenomenal facility that will serve as a space for residents to gather, learn and play together for many years to come."
"The new York Recreation Centre is a testament to the strong commitment by the City of Toronto to the residents of York South-Weston," said MPP Albanese. "This truly is an opportunity for our community to finally enjoy and benefit from this great centre. Congratulations to all."
"This fully accessible centre provides state-of-the-art recreation facilities for Torontonians of all ages and abilities to use," said Councillor Pasternak. "As a priority centre, it's wonderful that all City-run programs will be offered here free of charge."
"This is the first community centre in the former municipality of York," said Councillor Di Giorgio. "This versatile facility allows us to meet all of the needs of the community from large competitive swim meets to walking clubs for seniors and everything in between."
"The creation of this recreation centre has been a vision of mine for several decades – since my days as Mayor of York," said Councillor Nunziata. "To see it come to fruition is truly a dream and I am so glad to witness it."
The new fully accessible 6,255-square-metre facility features a six-lane, 25-metre pool with ramp and seating gallery, tot pool, indoor running/walking track, fitness studio, weight room, multi-purpose rooms, kitchen and double gymnasium.
There are over 100 parking spaces at the facility. The main parking entrance is at the intersection of Black Creek Drive and Photography Drive.
