TORONTO, April 6, 2020 /CNW/ - Marissa Tiel, a multimedia journalist with the Campbell River Mirror in British Columbia, is the winner of the 2020 Tom Hanson Photojournalism Award, presented by The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) and The Canadian Press (CP).
The coveted award, established in memory of the late, prize-winning CP photographer Tom Hanson, will allow Tiel to join CP's head office in Toronto this summer for a six-week internship, mentored by experienced photojournalists, and to have the opportunity for national exposure. Tiel's multimedia journalism career includes working at the Revelstoke Review, the White Horse Daily Star and Calgary Herald/Calgary Sun.
"There are so many reasons why Marissa won this year's award," says former Tom Hanson Award winner Michelle Siu, a photojournalist, documentarian and jury member. "Her portfolio was evidence of an early-career photographer who uses every opportunity to take small moments and turn them into memorable and emotional images as she cut her teeth in smaller market publications.
"In her work, jury members saw stunning light and beautiful moments that are a cut above for someone so early in on their career. There's a special quality of self-motivation and humble hustle."
Tiel's portfolio was selected among submissions by students and early-career photojournalists from across the country.
"It's an honour to be this year's award winner," says Tiel. "I'm grateful for the opportunity to hone my skills with the Canadian Press and I look forward to working alongside strong, knowledgeable photojournalists and editors."

About the Tom Hanson Photojournalism Award

The Tom Hanson Photojournalism Award offers a six-week paid internship at The Canadian Press head office in Toronto for a photojournalist in the early stages of his or her career.
