CJF Special Citation goes to The New Yorker's Ronan Farrow for Harvey Weinstein exposé
TORONTO, May 16, 2018 /CNW/ - The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) will honour Ronan Farrow with its Special Citation for his New Yorker investigation exposing sexual harassment and assault allegations against disgraced Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein and the complex web of people and systems he used to cover up his acts.
The honour, awarded on a discretionary basis by the CJF, will be presented at the annual CJF Awards in Toronto at The Fairmont Royal York on June 14.
Farrow will be celebrated alongside New York Times reporters Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey, previously announced to receive the CJF Special Citation, for their separate investigations into Weinstein and the worldwide impact of their stories. For their work, both The New Yorker and The New York Times were also recipients of the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service.
The two groundbreaking pieces were published within a week of each other and led other women victimized by the movie mogul to speak out publicly. The articles inspired a global social media movement among victims of sexual assault and harassment and led many women and men to come forth with allegations about the sexual misconduct of other powerful figures in entertainment and across different industries.
In addition to writing for The New Yorker, Farrow makes documentaries for HBO, is the author of the bestselling "War on Peace: The End of Diplomacy and the Decline of American Influence" and is at work on a new book, "Catch and Kill," that will explore the sexual misconduct of powerful men and the systems in place to keep victims quiet.
The CJF Awards celebrates excellence in journalism by honouring those who have made significant contributions to the profession and by recognizing emerging talent.
Other awards to be presented include the new CJF-Facebook Journalism Project News Literacy Award, the CJF Jackman Awards for Excellence in Journalism, the CJF Lifetime Achievement Award, the CJF-CBC Indigenous Journalism Fellowships, The Landsberg Award, the Tom Hanson Photojournalism Award, the Atkinson Fellowship in Public Policy and the William Southam Journalism Fellowships.
