CJFE Releases Federal Election Platform Report Card
Four major political parties are graded for their stances on free expression issues
TORONTO, Oct. 14, 2015 /CNW/ - Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) has released a federal election platform report card, grading the four major political parties for their stances on critical free expression issues in Canada.
The parties are graded based on their platforms, public statements, and policy proposals on six key aspects of free expression: (1) Public Right to Know, (2) Bill C-51, (3) Privacy Rights, (4) Muzzling of Scientists, (5) Whistleblower Protection and (6) Charitable Audits.
The report card provides an assessment of the critical free expression issues that must be addressed if Canada is to protect the rights of our citizens, lift the veil of secrecy that has descended on our government, and restore accountability and trust in our democracy.
Amid the country's longest federal election campaign since 1872, crucial issues affecting our fundamental right to free expression are often being lost among a barrage of election messages and soundbites.
"We looked for the signal hidden in the noise," said CJFE Executive Director Tom Henheffer. "Canadians deserve an open and trustworthy government, and we aim to provide a clear reference source to easily understand where each party stands on the critical issues affecting our rights."
CJFE is a nonpartisan organization, and does not endorse any party. Following the election, CJFE will be monitoring and holding all parties accountable for their protection of free expression rights.
