Swatch Beach Volleyball FIVB World Tour Finals Sept. 13 – 18, 2016 at Polson Pier
TORONTO, Sept. 1, 2016 /CNW/ - From Sept. 13 - 18, 2016, Canada will host the biggest beach volleyball event after the Olympic Games. The best teams on the planet, including both gold medalists from Rio, will meet for the Swatch Beach Volleyball FIVB World Tour Finals, part of the Swatch Major Series.
In front of the Toronto skyline, at the picturesque location of Polson Pier, the eight best teams of each gender plus four wildcards will battle for the sought-after crowns and $100,000 USD prize.
Our local Canadian heroes and duo of Ben Saxton and Chaim Schalk, and Josh Binstock and Sam Schachter, will bring their top game with the goal to win on home sand.
The top eight of the FIVB World Tour ranking are joined by the 2015 defending champions and 2016 Olympic gold medalists, Alison Cerutti and Bruno Schmidt from Brazil. Other notable athletes include Olympic gold medalists from Germany for woman's beach volleyball, Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst, and bronze medalists from the Netherlands for men's beach volleyball, Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen.
In the women's bracket the wildcards go to Jamie Broder and Kristina Valjas from Canada,
Joana Heidrich and Nadine Zumkehr from Switzerland, and Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy from Australia.
The fans in Toronto will be delighted to see a battle for the second Canadian wildcard for the women's showdown. After Rio, Sarah Pavan and Heather Bansley of Team Canada decided to split. On Tuesday, Sept. 13 Sarah and Heather, with their new partners, will play against each other for the remaining spot in the tournament. It will make a very special and unique beginning to the finals at Polson Pier.
