Clean the World selects Toronto's Turtle Island Recycling as Canadian partner
to collect and recycle hotel soaps and shampoos
More than 5,000 lbs. of gently used hotel soaps expected to be recycled each month
TORONTO and ORLANDO, FL, Nov. 16 /CNW/ - Clean the World (www.cleantheworld.org), a U.S.-based charitable organization that recycles hotel soaps and bottled amenities (shampoos, conditioners, and lotions), has selected Turtle Island Recycling (www.turtleislandrecycling.com) of Toronto as its Canadian partner for reducing landfill waste caused by discarded hotel amenities.
Clean the World will provide soap recycling expertise and direction for the Turtle Island Recycling project, and will act as a distribution network for the more than 5,000 lbs. of hotel soap per month. Plans are to double that number in the immediate months that follow.
The soaps will be distributed to locations throughout Ontario and globally as needed.
Clean the World, which was founded in 2009, works with travel and hospitality industry partners through an innovative hotel amenities recycling program that helps ensure a steady flow of otherwise-discarded soaps and shampoos to the people who need them most. In less than two years Clean the World has partnered with more than 550 hotel properties in 47 states and eight provinces in Canada to collect, sanitize, recycle and distribute 390 tons (780,000 lbs.) of soap. Hotel partners represent major brands, such as The Walt Disney World Resorts, Harrah's Resorts, Mandarin Oriental, Westgate Resorts and Four Seasons.
Each day in Canada alone, more than 50,000 pounds of hotel soaps are discarded after guest use. That's more than 18 million lbs. of waste per year that can be diverted from landfills through this soap recycling partnership.
As part of the agreement, Clean the World and Turtle Island Recycling plan to open a recycling operations center (ROC) in downtown Toronto that will service a growing number of participating Canadian hotels, resorts and bed-and-breakfasts. Clean the World also operates soap recycling centers in Vancouver and at its headquarters in Orlando, Fla. An additional ROC is scheduled to open early next year in Las Vegas.
"Turtle Island Recycling appreciates the importance of partnerships and developing strong relationships with organizations who share our same values and goals," says Amina Lang-Bismillah. "When researching how we could recycle soap in Toronto, we came across and were thoroughly impressed by Clean the World and the efforts that had been made in the U.S. with the soap recycling program. It seemed like a natural fit. The relationships that Clean the World has established with major hotel chains and other organizations, its strong media presence and their important mission to reduce waste and save lives makes this partnership ideal to Turtle Island Recycling."
Clean the World has soap recycling partnerships with 60 hotels in Canada with many more expected to join in the coming months. "We can count on Turtle Island Recycling to help collect, recycle and distribute high volumes of soaps and shampoos from hotel partners throughout Canada," says Shawn Seipler, executive director. "When you consider that 9,000 children die every day from preventable diseases that can be avoided by washing regularly with bar soap, you understand how essential the prompt delivery of these products is to our distribution partners."
Turtle Island Recycling, which takes its name from the Anishinabe tribal name for North America, has been operational for 20 years in Toronto.
