Sand, sun, Buvette par APOLLO, panoramic views and activities for all, starting June 16!
MONTREAL, May 14, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - At last! A beach just steps from downtown: June 16 marks the opening of the Clock Tower Beach at the Old Port of Montreal, a new place where Montrealers will be able to relax all summer long, until September 23.
Located just a short distance from the historic district, the urban beach at the Old Port will have a vacation atmosphere, with fine sand, colourful chairs and parasols, breathtaking vistas, refreshing misters, as well as the Buvette par Apollo where friends can gather for drinks or snacks until dusk. Indeed, the Buvette par Apollo of the Clock Tower Beach is destined to become a destination in itself, with acclaimed chef Giovanni Apollo at the helm and a concept tailored to the beach experience.
Located at the foot of the Clock Tower, the spectacular entrance to the Old Port, the Clock Tower Beach will become a unique place that will be identified with Montreal, a relaxing setting where sun worshippers can enjoy peace and quiet and still be connected directly to the city and the lively Old Port and its many attractions.
The Clock Tower Beach is the result of the Old Port of Montréal Corporation's desire to give Montrealers better access to the river. The beach will create a physical link with the river, so that people can have access to the shores of the Saint Lawrence while enjoying a relaxing spot in an urban setting.
During the day, the Clock Tower Beach will be a relaxing place to enjoy a siesta, sunbathe or read a good book. However, there will be no swimming allowed in the river for safety reasons. Artistic events and presentations will periodically be featured in the afternoon and evening, but without disturbing the peace.
In the evening, night owls will be able to congregate at the end of the quay near the refreshment stand to drink, eat and chat with friends while watching night fall over the river and taking advantage of a prime spot from which to view the fireworks.
Until now, Montreal did not have a beach with such a direct connection to the downtown, intended for urban users, who can access it on foot directly from Old Montreal. The Old Port is meeting this need in an original way, offering a new haven for Montrealers, between the hustle and bustle of the city and the powerful Sainte-Marie current, where sailing ships once had to wait for favourable winds to be able to come into port.
The Old Port thanks Vins de Provence and ESKA, official sponsors of the Clock Tower Beach, as well as Coppertone and acknowledges the support of its main partner, the Government of Canada, of TELUS, Sleeman and Coca-Cola, and of the Canadian Wildlife Federation.
