CNIB mourns passing of Jim Flaherty, devoted champion of Canadians with disabilities

TORONTO, April 10, 2014 /CNW/ - Jim Flaherty epitomized the role of a devoted public servant in Canada. His career was replete with distinguished achievements and throughout it all his continued commitment to the issues faced by Canadians with disabilities was unsurpassed.

This belief in equality was demonstrated not least through his creation of the Registered Disability Savings Plan in 2008. The RDSPs were the first tax-assisted savings plans anywhere across the globe designed specifically to provide financial security for individuals living with disabilities.

Jim was also instrumental in the creation of the Abilities Centre in his home riding. This newly-constructed centre is a charitable organization that delivers an abundance of opportunities in a range of fields - sports, arts, life skills and more - for people of all ages and abilities in a barrier-free environment.

As a true public servant of Canada for many years, Jim provided leadership to our country throughout some turbulent times. On behalf of the CNIB community we offer our condolences to his wife Christine and their three sons. Jim was a friend to CNIB and a lifelong supporter and champion of people with disabilities. He will be missed by all who had the honour and pleasure of working alongside him. His contributions have helped make Canada a more inclusive, welcoming place.
