CNSC Annual Assessment Shows OPG's Nuclear Plants Operate Safely

Darlington Nuclear Achieves Top Canadian Rating for Fifth Year in a Row

TORONTO, Aug. 21, 2014 /CNW/ - The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission's (CNSC) annual safety assessment shows Ontario Power Generation's nuclear facilities continue to operate safely and to a high standard of operational excellence. OPG's Darlington station was the only station to receive the highest standard of "Fully Satisfactory."

"Safety is paramount to our operations and we continue to focus on operational excellence and continuous improvement," said Glenn Jager, OPG's Chief Nuclear Operating Officer. "This assessment demonstrates the commitment to a culture of safety by the staff and management at our nuclear sites," he added.

This is the fifth year in a row of sustained top performance by Darlington. The rating by the regulator follows on the heels of Darlington's recent excellent peer evaluation, and maintains Darlington's standing as being among the top performing nuclear plants in the world.

The strongest performance gain, over 2012 results, by a nuclear station in Canada was demonstrated by OPG's Pickering Nuclear, with two areas - radiation and security - upgraded to "fully satisfactory."

Overall ratings for Pickering and Darlington Nuclear stations remain unchanged from last year. Both stations were evaluated by CNSC staff in the 2013 Integrated Safety Assessment of Canadian Nuclear Power Plants for 2013 ("2013 NPP Report"). The report summarizes the CNSC staff's assessment of the Canadian nuclear power industry's safety performance during 2013, in 14 individual safety and control areas.

The Integrated Safety Assessment of Canadian Nuclear Power Plants was presented and discussed at the CNSC Commission Meeting on Aug. 20, 2014.
