QUEBEC CITY, May 3, 2013 /CNW/ - CO2 Solutions Inc. (TSX-V: CST), an innovator in the field of enzyme-enabled carbon capture technology, today hosted The Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada, for the official announcement of a $4.7 million grant from Natural Resources Canada to CO2 Solutions. The announced grant will support the development and piloting of CO2 Solutions' carbon capture technology in the Alberta oil sands. The Prime Minister toured the Company's facilities in Quebec City where initial work on the project is being conducted.
CO2 Solutions is developing carbon capture technology for use in oil sands production, including in-situ methods such as Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage, and bitumen upgrading. The project is being partially funded via this $4.7 million grant from the Harper Government's ecoENERGY Innovation Initiative as well as $500,000 from Alberta's Climate Change and Emissions Management Corporation (CCEMC).
"The Alberta oil sands industry is a vital economic engine for Canada, but also represents approximately 20 per cent of our country's carbon emissions," said Glenn Kelly, President and CEO of CO2 Solutions. "We are developing a cost-effective technology to address this critical environmental challenge facing the oil sands. We are honoured that the Prime Minister would take the time to tour our facilities and are pleased that the Government of Canada is supporting advanced clean energy technologies that will contribute to the responsible development of Canada's energy resources."
