HALIFAX, NS, Oct. 23, 2023 /CNW/ - The Coastal Care Veterinary Emergency and Referral Hospital, Halifax, Nova Scotia, will collaborate with the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) at the University of Prince Edward Island to provide new educational opportunities for AVC students and the broader veterinary community across the Atlantic region.
Coastal Care Veterinary Emergency and Referral Centre is a new state-of-the-art care facility for the region. AVC is one of five veterinary colleges in Canada and the only institution educating doctors of veterinary medicine in Atlantic Canada.
Part of the P3 Veterinary Partners group of hospitals, Coastal Care Veterinary Emergency and Referral Hospital (Coastal Care) is set to open in late 2023. Coastal Care has an 18,000-square-foot centre of excellence with nine exam rooms, three surgical suites, and advanced imaging capabilities, and a dedicated ICU. It will also have a learning centre to be used for educational purposes.
This strategic partnership will initially provide external rotation opportunities for DVM students from AVC with specialists in various areas, such as surgery, cardiology, internal medicine, anesthesia, and radiology. Coastal Care and AVC will also provide continuing education opportunities for the broader veterinary community, leveraging specialists from the Coastal Care team, the College's faculty, and industry experts in a dedicated, purpose-built space.
"We are happy to have additional educational opportunities for AVC students, as well as the veterinary community and the public, in Atlantic Canada."
- Dr. John Vanleeuwen, Interim Dean, Atlantic Veterinary College
"We are excited to be part of this unique partnership and have the opportunity to help shape and support the new generation of veterinarians and specialists. Our primary focus, other than patient care, is to provide a welcoming and collaborative environment where we can encourage and learn from each other." - Dr. Gisela Cucchetti, Head of Emergency Medicine, Coastal Care Veterinary Emergency and Referral Hospital
