Collective agreements reached between the Algoma Tankers and the Canadian Merchant Service Guild

Minister Leitch congratulates parties on reaching two new agreements

OTTAWA, Sept. 30, 2014 /CNW/ - The Honourable Dr. K. Kellie Leitch, Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women, congratulated Algoma Tankers and the Canadian Merchant Service Guild today on reaching two new collective agreements. The two collective agreements cover a unit of 30 engineering officers and a unit of 38 navigation officers working on Algoma Tankers vessels.

• The agreements were reached with assistance from the Labour Program's Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, which provides dispute resolution and dispute prevention assistance to trade unions and employers under the jurisdiction of the Canada Labour Code.
• Over the past five years, 94 percent of collective bargaining negotiations in the federal jurisdiction were resolved without a work stoppage when the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service was involved.
• The units' previous collective agreements expired on July 31, 2013.
• Algoma Tankers shipping vessels transport liquid petroleum products through the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence Waterway and the Atlantic Canadian regions. Their main customers include major oil refiners, leading wholesale distributers and large-scale consumers of petroleum products.
