Competition Bureau and Japan Fair Trade Commission enhance cooperation in cross-border enforcement Français
OTTAWA, May 11, 2017 /CNW/ - A stronger Cooperation Arrangement between the Competition Bureau and the Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) will further build ties between the law enforcement agencies.
Commissioner of Competition, John Pecman, and Chairman of the JFTC, Kazuyuki Sugimoto, signed the Cooperation Arrangement today in Porto, Portugal, where they are attending the International Competition Network Annual Conference.
The new Arrangement promotes further cooperation, coordination, and communication of information in relation to their enforcement activities. Sharing information will further increase the efficiency of investigations and promote more effective outcomes.
Collaboration with international counterparts supports effective enforcement of the Competition Act and strengthens efforts to address anti-competitive cross-border conduct.
Quick Facts
- The Arrangement has been drafted in accordance with the Agreement Between the Government of Canada and the Government of Japan Concerning Cooperation on Anticompetitive Activities signed in 2005. This is the second competition cooperation instrument between the Bureau and the JFTC. The new Cooperation Arrangement is consistent with amendments to Japan's law in 2009.
- The Bureau has negotiated cooperation instruments with 14 jurisdictions, including Australia, Brazil, Chile, the European Union, Hong Kong, India, Japan, the People's Republic of China, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Quote
"International partnerships support our work in ensuring that markets remain competitive and innovative in an increasingly global economy. This Cooperation Arrangement is good news for consumers in both jurisdictions and will help Canadian businesses prosper in domestic and foreign markets."
