OTTAWA, Dec. 7, 2016 /CNW/ - The Competition Bureau worked with Moose Knuckles, a premium outerwear brand, to reach an agreement regarding concerns over its advertising and labelling of certain parkas that are promoted as Made in Canada. This agreement brings an end to the legal proceedings launched by the Bureau earlier this year.
As part of the settlement, Moose Knuckles has agreed to donate $750,000 over five years to charities in Canada, such as those that provide winter jackets to children in need.
In addition, the company has agreed to make it clearer that certain parkas are in fact made with Canadian and imported components and will ensure that representations made about parkas in Canada and worldwide abide by the settlement. The company will also add operations at its Canadian factories, and implement an internal compliance program to ensure that advertising and labelling issues do not occur again and that it can continue to operate in a competitive marketplace.
This agreement is the second of its kind to have been reached through a mediation process in a Competition Tribunal proceeding. The Bureau welcomes the mediation process as an additional tool for reaching mutually agreeable resolutions that achieve desirable competitive outcomes in a timely and efficient manner.
Quotes
"The end result is that consumers can continue to trust and take pride in Made in Canada products. We are pleased that this matter was settled outside of court, saving taxpayer money. This innovative resolution also provides clarity on the Bureau's approach to Made in Canada claims."
