Completion of Highway 35 - Inauguration of a segment of Highway 35, between Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and Highway 133 in Saint-Sébastien

LONGUEUIL, QC, Oct. 17, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - Philippe Couillard, Premier of Quebec, Robert Poëti, Quebec Minister of Transport and Minister responsible for the Montréal Region, and Claude Carignan, Leader of the Government in the Senate, today inaugurated a segment of Highway 35 between Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and Highway 133 in Saint-Sébastien. Also present for the occasion were Peter Shumlin, Governor of Vermont, and Pierre Paradis, Quebec Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Minister responsible for the Estrie region.

"In January 2009, the Government of Quebec began constructing the highway from Vallée-des-Forts in Montérégie. This highway is crucial to completing the essential 500-km link between Montreal and Boston, and to make the Highway 35-Interstate 89 link a true trade corridor between Quebec and New England," said Premier Philippe Couillard.

"Highway 35 will separate local and through traffic from Highway 133, which means that this road will be safer and that its neighbours will have a better quality of life. It will also help reduce the travel time between communities near the US border and Montreal," said Mr. Poëti.

To date, about $200 million has been invested in the Highway 35 extension. This project is funded through an agreement between the Government of Canada and the Government of Quebec.

"The Government of Canada is proud to invest in the completion of Highway 35 in Montérégie. This investment not only fosters trade between Canada and the United States, but will also improve the safety of road users and traffic flow at the Saint-Armand border crossing," said Mr. Carignan.

Road users who want to go to the United States will now be able to take Highway 35 from Highway 10 in Carignan to Saint-Sébastien, a distance of 42 km. They can then take Highway 133 for 17 km to the American border at the Saint-Armand border crossing, which leads to Interstate 89.

"Vermont is our immediate neighbour and Quebec's third-largest trade partner in the United States. Highway 35 will keep traffic flowing smoothly at the border, which will have economic benefits for trade and tourism," said the Premier.
