Discover the journey from field to food, furniture and fuel at the Grains in Your Life exhibit
TORONTO, Nov. 2, 2012 /CNW/ - Grain Farmers of Ontario invites families, urbanites and students to discover how grains can take us beyond the kitchen table to furnish and fuel the province at the Grains in Your Life exhibit. Open from November 2nd to 11th at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, the interactive exhibit allows visitors to explore corn, soybeans and wheat from sprout to harvest while also considering sustainable living.
Challenging visitors to broaden their eco-friendly perspective, the Grains in Your Life exhibit is designed with grain-derived products, including soy-based home insulation, carpet made from corn-based polymers, cupboards built from compressed wheat straw and corn-resin countertops. These eco-friendly and sustainable alternatives to petroleum based products provide Ontarians with simple solutions to lead a cleaner, greener lifestyle -- starting at home. The exhibit will also serve as an interactive and educational display, presenting the lifecycle of grains, from the field, through the development and manufacturing phases, and finally into the hands of consumers.
"With 28,000 grain farmers province wide, Ontario is a top producer of Canadian corn, soybeans and winter wheat," says Erin Fletcher, Manager, Public Affairs and Communications, Grain Farmers of Ontario. "From the farm to the home, these crops are innovative, grown-in-Ontario resources with endless possibilities."
In Ontario, both corn and soybeans are used in the creation of biofuels—ethanol and biodiesel respectively. Partnering with Great Lakes Biodiesel and GreenField Ethanol, the Grain Farmers of Ontario exhibit showcases automotive grain-spiration, including a car and gas pump to inform visitors about how corn and soybeans can be used to fuel and manufacture the vehicles we drive. Using an ultra-violet light inside the car, guests can discover grain-based product possibilities from floor mats to seats, driving home the versatility of grains.
"Biofuels are reducing greenhouse gas emissions by more than 2.3 million tonnes each year - equivalent to taking over 500,000 cars off the road," says Fletcher. "That is simply by adding ethanol or biodiesel components to the fuel we use each day."
The Grains in Your Life exhibit will be showcased at this year's Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto between November 2 and 11, which typically attracts more than 320,000 urban and rural visitors. Grain in Your Life has been made possible through generous sponsorships from GreenField Ethanol, Great Lakes Biodiesel, and Ingredion Canada Incorporated as well as partnerships with cutting-edge Canadian companies using corn, soybeans and wheat within their environmentally-friendly products including: Brentwood Classics, Durra, Future Fine Furniture, Green Living Flooring, Latitude Countertops, Mohawk Flooring, Natural Soy Candles, Nutrisoya, RW Doors and Whole Foods.
