TORONTO, Feb. 12, 2014 /CNW/ - Ontario's Chief Electoral Officer would like to remind media about laws to keep in mind when covering the by-elections in the Electoral Districts of Niagara Falls and Thornhill.
Ontario law imposes a two day blackout on political advertising between Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at midnight and election day, Thursday, February 13, 2014. There is also a blackout on the publication of election surveys that have not previously been made public. The blackout on the publication of election surveys begins at midnight on Wednesday, February 12, 2014 and ends at 9 p.m. on Thursday, February 13, 2014. Media representatives are also reminded that filming and/or photography is not permittedinside a provincial voting location. The only exception to this prohibition is for media tofilm/photograph candidates casting their ballot. A photo opportunity needs to bearranged ahead of time between the candidate and the local returning officer. ElectionsOntario Media Relations can provide you with still photography or footage of voting relatedactivity upon request.
Media representatives may attend the local returning office at the close of polls. You areadvised to make arrangements with the Returning Officer in advance.
