TORONTO, July 30, 2013 /CNW/ - Ontario's Chief Electoral Officer would like to remind media about laws to keep in mind when covering the by-elections in the Electoral Districts of Etobicoke—Lakeshore, London West, Ottawa South, Scarborough—Guildwood and Windsor—Tecumseh.
Ontario law imposes a two day blackout on political advertising between Tuesday July 30, 2013 at midnight and election day, Thursday, August 1. There is also a blackout on the publication of election surveys that have not previously been made public. The blackout on the publication of election surveys begins at midnight on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 and ends at 9 p.m. on Thursday, August 1, 2013. For more information on these laws, read our factsheet: Information for the media, publishers and broadcasters.
Media representatives are also reminded that filming and/or photography is not permitted inside a provincial voting location. The only exception to this prohibition is for media to film/photograph candidates casting their ballot. A photo opportunity needs to be arranged ahead of time between the candidate and the local returning officer. Elections Ontario Media Relations can provide you with still photography or footage of voting related activity upon request.
Media representatives may attend the local returning office at the close of polls. You are advised to make arrangements with the Returning Officer in advance.
Elections Ontario is the non-partisan agency responsible for administering provincial elections, by-elections and referenda.
