TORONTO, April 11, 2017 /CNW/ - The extensive financial literacy program of Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada) is again an award winner with special honours also going to the individual who oversees the initiative.
The recognition comes from the U.S.-based Institute for Financial Literacy through two prestigious Excellence In Financial Literacy Education (EIFLE) Awards.
Cairine Wilson, who leads CPA Canada's financial literacy program, was recognized with an EIFLE Legacy Award for her outstanding contributions in helping Canadians become better money managers.
"This is a well-deserved honour," says Jane Rooney, Canada's financial literacy leader. "Cairine is a devoted individual with whom I've had the pleasure of working closely with and she has made outstanding contributions in strengthening the financial knowledge of Canadians."
"Cairine's dedication and passion for advancing the financial literacy of Canadians is why our program is both effective and continues to attract international recognition," adds Joy Thomas, president and CEO, CPA Canada. "Our efforts are supportive, providing the tools, resources and inspiration required to help others and in doing so creates a distinctly Canadian approach that not only helps individuals and families but also contributes to economic sustainability."
CPA Canada's program boasts an extensive outreach component with 11,000 member volunteers, produces award-winning publications and offers valuable information online.
"I deeply appreciate the acknowledgment and respect that comes with the legacy award," says Wilson, who is vice-president, corporate citizenship with CPA Canada. "My team, the organization, the profession and so many others have contributed greatly to the success of CPA Canada's financial literacy program."
The 2017 EIFLE Awards were recently presented at the Annual Conference on Financial Education in Chicago, Illinois. CPA Canada has won eight EIFLE Awards in the past five years.
In addition to Wilson being honoured this year, CPA Canada was recognized in the category of Adult Education Program: Money Management for creating a practical guide to help unemployed Canadians. The publication is titled Survive and Thrive – Move ahead financially after losing your job and is available as a free download: cpacanada.ca/surviveandthrive
The book was developed in conjunction with author David Trahair after CPA Canada received a request from the Calgary Public Library for a realistic guide to help those facing the financial and emotional stress associated with job loss.
"The EIFLE award is richly deserved," says Leslie Adams, the Library's community learning advocate. "The Library identified a need and CPA Canada came through with a timely and valuable resource that helps unemployed individuals in Calgary and beyond."
Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life contributed funding for the development of the special guide.
"Increasing the financial knowledge, skills and confidence of Canadians is a big job," explains Rooney. "CPA Canada and the accounting profession are playing an important role in promoting financial literacy and making valuable information available for those who need it."
