CRRF events in Hamilton to focus on Canadian identity, diversity and ways to create more inclusive communities

HAMILTON, ON, March 23, 2016 /CNW/ - The Canadian Race Relations Foundation (CRRF) is bringing two events to Hamilton next week to deepen the dialogue around diversity, inclusion and Canadian identity.

The "Hamilton Living Together Symposium" – part of a series of cross-country events – will be held at the Art Gallery of Hamilton on March 29. The interactive event will be dedicated to building a deeper understanding of attitudes towards identity, belonging, and to explore the ways Hamilton can become more inclusive of its diverse communities.  

"As cities like Hamilton grow increasingly diverse, there is a strong imperative for open and candid conversations," said Anita Bromberg, Executive Director, CRRF. "The Symposia are opportunities to explore important issues, and to work together to envision a future that best reflects our diverse ethnocultural communities."

The Symposium will be held in partnership with the City of Hamilton, Hamilton Regional Indian Centre, Wesley Urban Ministries and Empowerment Squared. It will be moderated by Hamilton city councillor Matthew Green.  

The conversation will continue on March 31, when the CRRF will host its "Our Canada Workshop" at the Social Planning and Research Council of Hamilton. The workshop is part of a cross-Canada series bringing people together in conversation about faith-based issues and new situations that have emerged with the demands of building unity within diversity.

"Work still needs to be done in order to foster a better understanding and respect for diversity and unity," said Albert Lo, Chairperson, CRRF. "The Symposia and Cross-Canada Workshops are part of the CRRF's ongoing efforts to bring together faith and community leaders, academics and diversity champions to engage in important and timely dialogue, and to build a deeper understanding of Canadian identity."
