CSA Standards announces Derek Henriques as the 2010 recipient of the
prestigious John Jenkins Award

TORONTO, June 21 /CNW/ - CSA Standards, a leading standards-based solutions organization, today officially announces Mr. Derek Henriques, P.Eng, Principal, Henriques Consulting, an Energy-Efficiency and Demand-Side Management (DSM) Consultancy, as the recipient of the 2010 John Jenkins Award. The award is CSA Standards' most prestigious honour, bestowed upon the person who is judged to have rendered distinguished service in the development, advancement, and application of voluntary standards.

The 2010 John Jenkins Award was presented to Mr. Henriques of Richmond, BC by Brian J. McQueen, Chair of the Board, CSA Group at a special awards ceremony held during the CSA Standards Annual Conference in St. John's, Newfoundland. The award was conferred in recognition of Derek Henriques's 31 years of inspired leadership, international involvement and unwavering commitment to energy efficiency standards.

"Derek Henriques's significant participation, influence and direction when leading the development of the majority of CSA's current energy efficiency standards has been immense," says Bonnie Rose, President, CSA Standards. "Since he first volunteered in 1979, Derek has been the champion of numerous energy standards projects; including chairing the first large motor efficiency committee, which today forms the basis for international and regional standards in this area. Derek has continuously extolled the virtues of the CSA process within his industry and has been instrumental in securing resources to fund standards development in support of utility demand side management activities."

Additionally, Derek has chaired the Strategic Steering Committee on Performance, Energy Efficiency and Renewables (SCOPEER) for well over a decade. He further lends his leadership and insight to numerous other CSA committees for energy standards, such as TC 402 Industrial, TC 403 Residential, and TC 419 Lighting. Since his recent retirement in 2007 from BC Hydro, Mr. Henriques has enthusiastically taken on the role of CSA Consumer representative for energy-efficiency, while continuing his role on the Steering Committee. Derek has lent his leadership skills to further profile this important constituency.

Through BC Hydro and the PowerSmart(TM) program, Derek Henriques has embraced the role of standards in market transformation, energy access and security, consumer value and climate change solutions. Through the reference of CSA test procedures and/or corresponding minimum efficiency levels in legislation or procurement specifications, inefficient products have been restricted from entering the marketplace. Derek's actions have helped Canada's utilities save billions of dollars and customers have benefited from lower energy bills. In addition, greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced through the use of more energy-efficient products.

Embracing the importance of global standards for a global marketplace, Derek currently represents CSA Standards and Canada as a Consumer member on the ISO/TMB/SAG E, Strategic Advisory Group on Energy Efficiency and Renewables. His involvement has also provided the necessary insight to allow for a transition towards systems-based energy efficiency standards.

About the John Jenkins Award

The John Jenkins Award is CSA Standards' most prestigious honour. Nominations for the Award are open to individuals who have: shown leadership in various areas - through personal involvement over a period of years - in the development, advancement, and application of voluntary standards; encouraged the development and advancement of standards both nationally and internationally; and through foresight and action, helped to substantially advance the arts and sciences related to standardization. CSA Standards employees are not eligible.

Established in 1978 in memory of Dr. John Jenkins, the award commemorates the devotion and commitment demonstrated by Dr. Jenkins' more than 27 years of voluntary service to CSA and standards development. Dr. Jenkins immigrated to Canada from England in 1912 and went on to graduate from the University of British Columbia in 1923 as the country's first Forest Engineer. He served as a Colonel and Director of Military Planning at Defence Headquarters during World War II and, before his retirement in 1966, he was Director of the Forest Products Research Branch for the Federal Department of Forestry.

During his time with CSA Standards, Dr. Jenkins served as President - now Chairman of the Board - from 1967 to 1969, Chairman of the Standards Policy Board from 1969 to 1977, and Chairman of all major Standards committees related to lumber and building products. On June 19, 1975, Dr. Jenkins was inducted as an Honorary Member of CSA Standards in recognition of his outstanding service. He passed away at his Ottawa home on November 7, 1977.
