OTTAWA, March 3, 2017 /CNW/ - The Canadian Teachers' Federation (CTF) is set to welcome on Monday, March 6 about 40 teachers from across the country in preparation for the historic Daughters of the Vote event organized by Equal Voice, March 7-8 in Ottawa. The teachers, sponsored by CTF Member organizations, will be facilitating group discussions on March 7 with the 338 "Daughters of the Vote", aged 18 to 23, who were selected to represent every federal riding.
"CTF and Member organizations continue to be staunch supporters of democracy and women's rights," explains CTF President Heather Smith. "Agnes MacPhail, the first woman elected as a federal Member of Parliament, was an Ontario teacher whose leadership and vision have paved the way for other women to follow in her footsteps. But we still have a long way to go until women are fully represented at every level of government, be it municipal, provincial/territorial or federal. But thanks to Equal Voice, this event will be transformative on so many levels.
"A sincere thank you to CTF Member organizations for their generous contributions towards the hotel accommodation costs of the Daughters during their stay in Ottawa and for sponsoring exceptional teachers who will serve as mentors, group leaders and facilitators," adds Smith. "It will be quite moving to witness the Daughters taking their seat in the House of Commons on March 8, International Women's Day.
"Since most of these Daughters are former students educated in the Canadian public education system, it will be meaningful and symbolic to have the teachers accompany the Daughters at the threshold of their political lives. Teachers will be there to support the young women and to adhere to Equal Voice's slogan: "Be Her. Support Her. Celebrate Her."
