OTTAWA, April 22, 2016 /CNW Telbec/ - Today's filing of a human rights complaint against the tabloid paper Your Ward News is encouraging to the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.
"Postal Workers don't pick and choose which materials to carry. If Canada Post accepts it, we deliver," explains Mike Palecek, National President. "But many of us are fed up with being part of the distribution network for hateful material like Your Ward News."
The complaint calls the tabloid "misogynist, racist, anti-Jewish, anti-Muslim, and homophobic hate propaganda." Many postal workers and residents who receive the paper have objected to its content – both text and images – seeing it as hate speech in violation of the Canadian Human Rights Act. Now that will be put to a legal test. The complaint also suggests that Canada Post should have refused to distribute the paper under its own regulations.
Palecek continues, "Confronting bigotry, sadly, takes constant vigilance and allies from all over society. It doesn't just go away. Everyone has a part to play in the fight."
