Daily Bread Holiday Drive short on food donations
TORONTO, Dec. 19, 2013 /CNW/ - Daily Bread needs to raise $1 million and 800,000 pounds of food in order to reach its Holiday Drive goals by December 31.
With two weeks to go in Daily Bread's biggest food and fund drive, the Holiday Drive has so far raised $1.4 million and almost 200,000 pounds of food, with goals of $2.5 million and 1 million pounds of food.
"Food donations have been slow, but typically most of those donations will come in over the next week, just before Christmas", said Gail Nyberg, Daily Bread's executive director. "A million dollars in two weeks is certainly ambitious, but we're more than halfway to our dollar goal of $2.5 million."
Donations from the Holiday Drive will help Daily Bread continue to provide food for over 200 food programs and 66,000 visits to food banks a month. Donations of nutritious, non-perishable food can be dropped off at any local fire hall or participating grocery store. Most needed food items include peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables, canned fish and meat, rice, pasta, tomato sauce, powdered or tetra pak cartons on milk, canned or dried beans, lentils or your family's favourite nutritious, non-perishable food.
Financial donations can be made online at www.dailybread.ca or by mailing a cheque to Daily Bread Food Bank, 191 New Toronto St., Toronto, Ontario, M8V2E7. Every dollar donated means Daily Bread can provide $5 worth of food.
