Daily Bread launches Holiday Drive with largest goal ever
TORONTO, Nov. 27, 2013 /CNW/ - Donations have dropped and shelves are getting bare. Daily Bread is looking to turn that around with its largest Holiday Drive goals ever: $2.5 million and a million pounds of food.
"It's hard as a parent, when you're struggling to make ends meet, to realize you might not be able to put dinner on the table on Christmas day, let alone toys under the tree. If we can end hunger, one family at a time, than we're making a difference. But we can't do it alone," said Gail Nyberg, Daily Bread's executive director.
The money and food that is raised during the Holiday Drive provides food for over 200 programs and thousands of people who are struggling with hunger in Toronto over the winter months.
The Holiday Drive kicked off at Adelaide Street Fire Station #332 to remind Toronto that donations can be dropped off at fire halls across Toronto.
"Daily Bread Food Bank has had a long partnership with Toronto Fire Service and the Toronto Firefighters who help gather the donations. Their doors are always open, allowing people to donate food 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Their support means less people going hungry in this city," said Nyberg.
Most needed food items include: pasta, dried/canned beans or lentils, rice, canned fruit and vegetables, baby formula and food, tomato sauce, peanut butter, canned tuna/meat and powdered milk. Every dollar donated means Daily Bread can provide $5 worth of food.
Food donations can be dropped off at any local fire hall or participating grocery store. Financial donations can be made easily and securely online at www.dailybread.ca or by mailing a cheque to Daily Bread Food Bank, 191 New Toronto St., Toronto, Ontario, M8V2E7.
