TORONTO, Sept. 22, 2016 /CNW/ - Ashman Kennedy of Kitchener isn't sure he'll ever get used to being called a multimillionaire but smiles and promises, "I'll do my best!" Ashman had one of two winning tickets for the $60 million jackpot prize in the September 16, 2016 LOTTO MAX draw. Ashman's windfall was a whopping $30 million!
"I've been playing the same numbers for as long as I can remember," shared Ashman while at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to claim his windfall. "The day after the draw, I went to the store and got a printout of the winning numbers then took the slip back to one of my favourite places, my hobby shop. It's a garage where I go to tinker with my car, to relax and on this day, to check my lottery tickets."
It was Ashman's second ticket that stopped him in his tracks. "I checked every single number slowly and carefully against the winning numbers on the slip. They all matched. But how could that be? What did I do wrong? So I checked my ticket again and again and again," he confessed.
Right away, Ashman called his son-in-law. No answer. "Then I tried to call one of my daughters and then my son and still got no response." Finally, Ashman anxiously reached out to his ex-wife and her husband who are close family friends. "I was so excited I could barely speak and just kept repeating 'lottery, lottery' over and over again. They rushed over, checked the ticket and exclaimed – this IS the winner!"
Ashman hasn't slept much these last few days. "All I do is think about my big win. It feels so good knowing my children and grandchildren will be well taken care of. I plan to take good care of myself too," he teased.
Ashman's dream is to explore the world. "China, Japan, India, Thailand and points beyond, to see and experience how other people live," he said. Closer to home, Ashman believes strongly in the value of education. "I want to make sure that my grandchildren pursue their dreams by getting the best education possible. I want to provide that for them."
Finally, Ashman is making plans for this winter. "I can't wait to hibernate in Jamaica, the island where I was born – the island of sunshine, warm breezes and beautiful water."
Ashman purchased his winning ticket at Petro Canada on Ottawa Street in Kitchener.
