BERLIN, April 15, 2013 /CNW/ - At this year's CeBit, Fraunhofer COMEDD's interactive data glasses were talk of the town.
Awarded the Mittelstand Initiative Prize for Innovation, the glasses are straight out of a sci-fi film. They react to eyeball movement and display information on a microscopic screen in front of the eyes, while you can also watch the world at large.
Trivisio, a company from Germany's Mittelstand - the small to medium-sized enterprises at the core of Germany's economic development - was heavily involved in the design. Another Mittelstand company operating in the Organic Light Emitting Diode market, Novaled, is subject to rumours of investment or takeover from either Samsung or Korean giant Doosan.
That's two companies from the same cluster near Dresden, reminding the world of the Mittelstand's capacity for innovation.
Appropriately, the 2013 Printed Electronics Europe expo will start in Berlin on April 17, just a couple of hundred kilometres from that 'Organic Electronics Saxony' cluster.
Germany Trade and Invest, the country's foreign investment promotion agency, will be at Printed Electronics 2013 to explain the myriad of innovations pouring forth from Germany's organic electronics industry.
"Organic Electronics Saxony is the biggest dedicated organic electronics cluster in the world," said Max Milbredt, Manager of Electronics and Microtechnologies at Germany Trade & Invest.
"The whole value chain for organic electronics is there, with all companies able to network and innovate together."
Germany Trade & Invest CEO Dr. Benno Bunse pointed out the source of the innovation.
"Once again, it falls to a small German company to produce a potentially revolutionary innovation," he said.
"Germany's Mittelstand leads the way in innovation and creativity, creating many opportunities for industries at large."
Germany Trade & Invest is the foreign trade and inward investment promotion agency of the Federal Republic of Germany.
