Canadian Dermatology Association to host public skin cancer screening at Skin Matters conference.

OTTAWA, Oct. 12, 2012 /CNW/ - The Canadian Dermatology Association (CDA) wants to remind Canadians to continue to check their skin for changes through the winter months.

As the cooler weather sneaks in and the summer days spent out by the pool or working in the yard are behind us, that does not mean the risk of skin cancer is behind us too. On Sunday, October 14 the CDA will be hosting free skin cancer screenings from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Toronto Marriott Downtown Eaton Centre during the Canadian Skin Patient Alliance's (CSPA) free Skin Matters Conference. Everyone is welcome to attend. Local dermatologists will be on hand to screen people for skin cancer and to teach them what to look for when doing their own self-examinations.

Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer which can be potentially deadly if not detected and treated early. Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and tanning beds play a significant role in the development of melanoma - a highly preventable disease.

As part of the CDA's commitment to public education and awareness, CDA strives to educate the Canadians on how to develop life-long healthy skin habits including sun protection and skin cancer self-examination. Join CDA this weekend at Skin Matters for inspiring talks and a post-summer skin cancer screening.
