MONTREAL, Feb. 13, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - Committed for over 45 years to the cause of vulnerable people in the Global South, DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE invites the public to become involved in this new edition of its annual Share Lent fundraising campaign. Beginning today, Ash Wednesday, and running until March 31, 2013, the campaign will highlight the work of partners in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East and their daily struggle for greater human dignity.
Over the years, Development and Peace's combat has remained the same: providing support for the most disadvantaged in favour of greater social justice. "This year, our campaign slogan, Human Dignity - More Than Ever, celebrates the intrinsic dignity of all human beings. Human dignity is at the heart of our values. It inspires us, as an organization of the Catholic Church of Canada, to act, to give, and to support those with whom we share this fundamental human principle," explains Michael Casey, Executive Director of DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE, before adding that "this edition of Share Lent provides us with a good opportunity to remind people that without human dignity there can be no progress." As is the case every year, in various parts of the country the organization will receive visitors in solidarity representing a certain number of our partners.
Thanks to donations from the general public, DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE will be able to continue to support its partners in implementing programs that enable disadvantaged communities to ensure their own development in a fully dignified way. The high point of the 2013 Share Lent campaign will occur on Sunday, March 17, also known as Solidarity Sunday, with the holding of a collection in every parish of the country. This year's campaign also invites all Canadians to participate in the Good Friday fast to raise funds and express their solidarity.
Every year, DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE helps reconstruct regions devastated by conflicts and natural disasters. Ten percent of donations collected during the Share Lent campaign are earmarked for emergency relief.
DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE, an international-solidarity organization of the Catholic Church of Canada, always holds its fundraising campaign during Lent, a time of year that is particularly conducive to sharing. Donations to DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE may be made by calling 1-888-234-8533 (514-257-8711 in the Montreal region) or by visiting the organization's website at www.devp.org,
