DFC Welcomes Government Actions to Improve Livestock Transportation
OTTAWA, Oct. 28 /CNW/ - Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) was pleased to see the
announcement by the Honourable Gerry Ritz, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food's, of new
measures being implemented by the Government of Canada to improve the welfare of Canada's
livestock animals while in transport. These heightened regulations and increased administrative
monetary penalties (AMPs) will act as another tool towards prevention of the mistreatment or
improper transport of livestock animals under the Health of Animals Act.
On-farm, dairy farmers across Canada continue to be leaders in the area of animal welfare, as
seen through the development and publication of the new "Code of Practice for the Care and
Handling of Dairy Cattle" in 2009.
"The 'Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Dairy Cattle' is the first of its kind in the
livestock industry, delivering a clearly established set of good practices, based on sound
science," said Jacques Laforge, President of Dairy Farmers of Canada. "Dairy farmers across
Canada use the Code of Practice as part of their day-to-day operations to ensure that they are
delivering the proper care and treatment of dairy cattle on-farm, including in the preparation and
loading of cattle for transport."
Canadian dairy farmers recognize the need for stringent regulations and strong enforcement
through the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) in order to ensure high standards of
animal care and welfare in transport. This important initiative clearly demonstrates the
Government of Canada's continued commitment to addressing the needs and values of Canadian
livestock producers and industry members, as well as those of Canadian consumers.
