D+H partners with Sunnybrook Research Institute to support student researchers
Donation will provide undergraduate students with unique hospital-based research experience
TORONTO, May 23, 2013 /CNW/ - Gerrard Schmid, CEO of Davis + Henderson Corporation (TSX:DH), today announced that D+H has donated $250,000 to Sunnybrook Research Institute (SRI) to support the institute's Summer Student Research Program, which is designed to attract outstanding university students into postgraduate careers. This is the first time a corporation has sponsored a research program at Sunnybrook; other corporate donations have focused on grant-based sponsorship.
"We are honoured to be partnering with Sunnybrook Research Institute to help students who want to become the innovators and researchers of the future," said Mr. Schmid. "Innovation is at the root of D+H's own success as a company, so it's a great fit for us to support a program that gives an early start to promising young scientists and may help spawn some of their ideas and innovations. The geographic proximity of the program is also attractive to us. Sunnybrook is very close to the D+H corporate office and we have a strong history and firm commitment to give back to the communities in which we live and work."
"Today's young science students are tomorrow's researchers, so it's crucial that we do whatever we can to nurture their interest in science," said Dr. Michael Julius, vice president of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and Sunnybrook Research Institute. "The support of D+H through this generous donation helps us to have the widest possible participation in the Summer Student Research Program. The students are an inspiration to all of us, and we look forward to hosting them this summer."
Media Advisory:
Media are welcome to visit the program and interview student participants over the summer months. On August 22nd SRI will also host an open house for media to attend the student award ceremony.
