Diabetes Canada and Weight Watchers Canada team up
Partnership supports healthy weight loss
TORONTO, Sept. 5, 2017 /CNW/ - Diabetes Canada is pleased to announce a partnership with Weight Watchers Canada to support healthy weight loss. Obesity and being overweight are potential risk factors for type 2 diabetes.
"With one in three Canadians living with diabetes or prediabetes, the disease has grown to epidemic proportions," says Diabetes Canada President and CEO, Rick Blickstead. "Without action, 50 per cent of people living with prediabetes will go on to develop type 2 diabetes, but the risk can be reduced by adopting a healthy lifestyle. Following a lifestyle change program and losing just 5 per cent of your weight can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58 per cent."
Weight loss is beneficial to those with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Diabetes Canada recognizes the Weight Watchers program as an effective way to lose weight through healthy eating and physical activity. The Weight Watchers Program helps people make realistic lifestyle changes to achieve and maintain weight loss and better blood sugar levels, which are important elements of type 2 diabetes prevention and management. The Beyond the Scale program takes a whole-life approach with a mix of food, activity and lifestyle which can be customized by individuals, based on their own needs.
"The Weight Watchers program has proven, impressive benefits on both weight loss and blood sugar for those with prediabetes. These results are coupled with convenient locations and a reasonable cost." says Dr. Gary Foster, Chief Scientific Officer at Weight Watchers.
To support the efforts of Diabetes Canada, Weight Watchers Canada is committed to matching all donations made during the Diabetes Canada year-end campaign up to $150,000 and supporting the Declutter program through Weight Watchers meetings rooms in September through to the end of October 2017.
To further mark the partnership with Diabetes Canada, Weight Watchers Canada is dedicated to providing support and guidance to those looking to manage and prevent prediabetes and type 2 diabetes through achieving a healthy weight with the proven Beyond the Scale program. This partnership and its efficacy for weight loss, and diabetes maintenance will be communicated to current and prospective Weight Watchers members via dedicated printed communications in conjunction with Diabetes Canada.
