Digi International Products Proven to Withstand World's Harshest Environments
Deployments Highlight Wireless Product Reliability in Extreme Conditions
MINNETONKA, Minn., Oct. 26, 2015 /CNW/ -- Digi International®, (NASDAQ: DGII, www.digi.com), a leading global provider of mission-critical machine-to-machine (M2M) and IoT connectivity products and services, today highlighted how its solutions have been selected for implementation in some of the world's most extreme environments.
Digi provides wireless M2M connectivity that delivers the reliability, scalability, security and bulletproof performance needed to build and deploy critical infrastructures in challenging environments. With Digi, companies can deploy and manage mission-critical wireless communications that work under some of the most demanding conditions imaginable.
Examples of Digi implementations in extreme conditions include:
NASA/Exo-Brake: The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) worked with Digi as part of a program to determine potential applications of wireless technologies in space. Digi's XBee® ZigBee products were used as part of a five-node network to monitor Exo-Brake performance – a specially-designed braking device that operates similar to a parachute at extremely high speeds and low air pressures. The flight plan called for the SOAREX (Sub-Orbital Aerodynamic Re-entry Experiments) payload to be delivered by a suborbital rocket to roughly 250 miles above earth. Specifically, the XBee modules were used to create the wireless sensor data network for the Exo-Brake, and transfer the data to a satellite uplink. Data captured included acceleration as well as temperature and air pressure.
NASA/Robonaut: NASA works with Digi to provide wireless connectivity enabling its second-generation Robonaut, Robonaut 2 (R2), to move freely throughout the International Space Station (ISS). Digi Wi-Fi technologies replaced wired connections for power and control, making R2 exponentially more useful as it can be manipulated from anywhere within the ISS or the NASA Mission Control Center on earth. R2 will be used to conduct mundane, yet important, repeatable tasks such as air quality testing. The wireless link also transmits views from four cameras on the Robonaut to allow astronauts and NASA control team members to see what the robot is seeing in real-time and to control its actions.
NOAA: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is in the process of deploying Digi wireless routers as critical backup communications to more than 70 of their remote Doppler radars. The effort is led by the Radar Operations Center (ROC) in Norman, Oklahoma, which is a tri-agency organization funded by NOAA, the Department of Defense and the Federal Aviation Administration. ROC is responsible for the operational support and maintenance of the nation's network of 160 S-band Doppler weather radars used for hazardous weather observation and detection.
Libelium: Located in Zaragoza, Spain, Libelium delivers powerful sensor platforms enabling system integrators to implement reliable M2M solutions with minimum time to market. Libelium offers smart environment solutions for forest fire detection; air pollution in Smart Cities with calibrated gases measuring magnitudes such as CO2, PM10 particles, NO2, etc.; water quality parameters; landslide and avalanche prevention; and earthquake early detection. Using Digi technologies, Libelium developed the Waspmote – a low-power wireless sensor capture, geo-localization and communication device with high transmission power designed to operate in harsh environments. Waspmote detects parameters such as humidity, temperature, CO2 emissions and vibrations. Digi modules meet Libelium requirements by providing low-cost and low-power wireless sensor networks that allow Libelium to network-enable sensor devices so that they can be monitored and controlled remotely to guarantee accurate transmission of information from sensors placed in isolated or difficult-to-access areas.
Firebreak USA Corp: Serving North America, Firebreak is a wildfire detection, forecasting and suppression provider whose solutions detect and report wildfires to local authorities and area residents to protect homes, property and people. Firebreak used Digi modules and gateways in remote areas where wireline data communication is unavailable. Digi wireless products connect to fire detection sensors and broadcast information to the network in real time via cellular or satellite. Alerts are set for notifying authorities, first-responders, land owners and other individuals, notifying them within a within a matter of seconds. In addition to alerts, the solution provides fire mapping and data visualization in real time.
"In terms of industrial-strength M2M and IoT solutions, no wireless vendor has more real-life experience than Digi," said Jeff Liebl, Digi vice president and chief marketing officer. "Our products operate in some of the most volatile conditions on earth and our customers know that when it comes to reliability, Digi aims to sets the standard."
Digi International solutions are put through an intensive quality control and stress parameters testing process that spans multiple condition factors including temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, vibration, shock, dielectric strength and abrasive/corrosive environmental conditions.
