Thomas G. Heintzman honoured at Call to the Bar Ceremony
TORONTO, Jan. 27, 2017 /CNW/ - The Law Society of Upper Canada presented a degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa (LLD), to lawyer Thomas G. Heintzman, O.C., Q.C., at its Call to the Bar ceremony on January 27 at Roy Thomson Hall.
Mr. Heintzman received the LLD in recognition of his immense contribution to the legal profession and the administration of justice in Canada, as a lawyer, educator, author and extraordinary mediator. For almost 50 years, Mr. Heintzman has been one of the country's leading counsel, having acted on some of Canada's most important cases both at trial and at the appellate level. (See full biography.)
As part of its Call ceremonies each year, the Law Society awards honorary doctorates to distinguished people in recognition of outstanding achievements in the legal profession, the rule of law or the cause of justice.
Law Society Treasurer Paul B. Schabas awarded the honorary LLD to Mr. Heintzman, who then delivered the keynote address to the Call candidates.
Mr. Heintzman expressed the hope that the new lawyers would find trusted colleagues to provide them with guidance. He also offered a prediction: "You will help some client when he or she really, really needs your help, in the darkest hour of their life. … Whatever it is, that person is alone, and is frightened, and needs someone to stand beside her. And you will do it. And when it's over, you will say to yourself: That's why I became a lawyer."
After officially calling the 152 new lawyers to the Bar, Treasurer Schabas advised in his remarks: "As lawyers, you have the capacity to make a difference. Your education and training, and your position as a member of the profession, empowers you and, in turn, can empower others. Your job is to use the law, and to develop the law, for the good of your clients and the good of society."
The Law Society of Upper Canada is the governing body for more than 50,000 lawyers and 8,000 paralegals in the province of Ontario, Canada. The mandate of the Law Society is to govern the legal profession in the public interest by upholding the independence, integrity and honour of the legal profession for the purpose of advancing the cause of justice and the rule of law.
