Distributel supports industry-wide CRTC application seeking regulatory repair
TORONTO, Nov. 7, 2018 /CNW/ - Distributel Communications Ltd. endorsed the Canadian Network Operators Consortium Inc. (CNOC) application with the CRTC to repair the regulatory environment for high-speed Internet.
"We must allow as many Canadians as possible to access affordable high-speed Internet at the increasingly high speeds they are demanding," Matt Stein, CEO, Distributel Communications Ltd.
The CRTC – as a regulator protecting consumers and promoting the public interest – has made decisions with the stated intention of supporting market and consumer choice. In 2015, the CRTC established a new set of rules under which the big players would be required to provide broadband connectivity to their competitors on a wholesale basis. It was designed to ensure continued robust competition in the Canadian marketplace for Internet services.
CNOC's filing outlines that while the 2015 ruling was well-intentioned, the framework has certain deficiencies and must be repaired. Specifically, today's filing seeks remedies to this framework that will ensure consumers won't face limited choice, and high prices for the Internet services they require.
"It's clear that Canadians benefit from a robust, competitive market for Internet services that depends on independent providers," said Mr. Stein. "Connectivity matters and competition is the best way to ensure affordable access for Canadians in all regions and at all income levels."
Mr. Stein concluded, "We are confident that the CRTC will do what is in the best interest of Canadian consumers."
