On November 3, and all month long, Pharmaprix invites the public to take the CANRISK Diabetes Questionnaire to understand their chances of developing the disease and how to reduce the risks
MONTREAL, Oct. 31, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - Pharmaprix is proud to announce its campaign to raise awareness and reduce risks for type 2 diabetes kicking off on November 3rd at Pharmaprix stores in Quebec and for the remainder of November, Diabetes Awareness Month.
On November 3rd, Pharmaprix invites the public to evaluate their personal risk of developing type 2 diabetes by taking the CANRISK Diabetes Questionnaire in stores across Quebec and discuss their results with their pharmacist.
"The risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes are not fully or well understood by the public," says Nabil Chikh, a Pharmaprix pharmacist-owner in Montreal. "Pharmacists are often on the front lines of health information for Quebecers and, during Diabetes Awareness Month, we want to help people understand their personal risk of developing this diabetes, particularly for those over 40."
According to a recent CROP poll conducted on behalf of Pharmaprix, nearly one in five respondent (17%) do not realize that adopting a diet rich in fat and salt contributes to increase the risks of developing type 2 diabetes. However, some risk factors are beyond our control, such as heredity, tendency to accumulate fat around the waist and, among women, having suffered from gestational diabetes.
Close to half of the poll's respondents (46 %) think that a high risk of type 2 diabetes will manifest with symptoms. This data may explain why from 760,000 Quebecers that have diabetes, 200,000 don't know it.
"If we help reduce the incidence by encouraging people to make small changes to their lifestyle, we've reached our goal," explains Mr. Chikh. Adding exercise to your schedule, cutting a few sources of fat from your diet or seeing your doctor more regularly, if necessary, are all ways of managing risks, which can be identified by taking the CANRISK test in a Pharmaprix near you."
