According to a recent German government report, The World Nuclear Industry Status Report 2009, the "nuclear renaissance" is over before it started. The report's author, awarding winning European energy expert Mycle Schneider, will discuss the downward trends facing the world nuclear industry, the economic barriers preventing a nuclear revival as well as the implications for international reactor vendors, including Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL).

Schneider's analysis forces us to ask two questions: Is there a future for the Canadian nuclear industry if there is no market for CANDU reactors? And what can be done with AECL?

To prepare AECL for the "nuclear renaissance" the Harper government has increased funding to AECL and is expected to announce this fall a restructuring of AECL.
