Donald R. Sobey Announces $4M MBA Scholarship Fund at Queen's School of Business
Fund Will Accompany D&R Sobey Atlantic Undergraduate Scholarship Program
KINGSTON, ON, Oct. 23, 2014 /CNW/ - Donald R. Sobey and Rob Sobey have announced the creation of a scholarship to support MBA candidates from Atlantic Canada applying to study at Queen's School of Business. The scholarship fund of $4M will provide several scholarships each year. The D&R Sobey Atlantic MBA Scholarship is available immediately for eligible MBA candidates entering the program in January 2015.
The MBA scholarship builds on the D&R Sobey Atlantic Undergraduate Scholarship established in 1999 by Donald Sobey and his son Rob, who are both alumni of Queen's University. The D&R Sobey Atlantic Undergraduate Scholarship is open to students from Atlantic Canada applying to their first year of the Bachelor of Commerce program at Queen's School of Business. Each scholarship has a total value of $78,000 to give students additional financial support to help cover such expenses as tuition fees, accommodation and travel costs. Since its inception in 1999, the D&R Sobey Atlantic Undergraduate Scholarship has dispersed $3.7M to 89 students from Atlantic Canada.
"It has given me enormous pride to see the success of young Atlantic Canadians who've studied at Queen's School of Business," said Donald Sobey. "I sincerely hope the addition of this new scholarship will bring high potential MBA candidates from Atlantic Canada to benefit from the excellence of a Queen's MBA.
"The years I spent studying at Queen's had a transformative impact on my life and these two scholarships have been designed to offer the same opportunity to students from my home region," he added.
A total of 24 students from Atlantic Canada currently receive Sobey undergraduate scholarships, which are awarded on the basis of academic ability, creative and original thinking, involvement in school and community activities, and leadership qualities. The 2014 recipients were all present for the announcement at Queen's. They are:
- Michael Coldwell - Dartmouth, NS
- Taryn Mason – Bedford, NS
- Isaac McLellan – Rothesay, NB
- Adam Otmar – Halifax, NS
- Bianca Toulany – Dartmouth, NS
- Richard Waller – Halifax, NS
"Don and Rob Sobey have generously supported scholarship, students and faculty at Queen's for 15 years," said David Saunders, Dean, Queen's School of Business. "Extending this support to the MBA program means more students from Atlantic Canada can share in the transformational experience of a Queen's business education."
